Oil filter line restricter

What size is the oil line restricter hole in the brass fitting that
is part of the external oil filter assembly on a 55 Champion? I have read that
it is .045-.060 but that is much smaller than the one I pulled from a setting V8 I pulled to measure (.1125). I am installing a P4 unit and want to make sure this restricter is sized right.

On this same topic I have a question- does the restrictor go on the 'oil input' or 'oil output' side to the oil filter? I'm putting together an older 289 for my Champ truck.

Kerry, the restrictor is .045 like the one you have. It goes on the inlet side so the pressure is reduced in the canister. The inlet is on the side of the canister, outlet on bottom.

I'm not sure .1125 is a restrictor. That's nearly 1/8 inch. There may have been more than one restrictor used, but the only one I can confirm is actually mentioned in Service Bulletin #350 (Dec. '59) It has a part number, 1549669 and is supposed to measure .0456, which by the way, is about the same size as the bypass hole in the oil pressure relief valve.

I always wondered how much good those filters do with that small of an orifice?

Somebody posted on this site once with the thru-put of the older oil filter setup. I can't remember exactly, but it was some number of gallons per minute, maybe five. Even if it was only one gallon per minute, that's your enitre capacity getting filtered every minute. Good enough for me.

Dadgum, that is small. I don't even have a drill bit that little. Well, I'll weld it back up and get a bit from Mcmaster-carr and re-drill.

You should still be able to buy a blank fitting that you can drill to size. Not common anymore, you may need to go to a shop that makes hydraulic hoses.
