Speedo / Tach / Gauges: need to replace speedometer cable

I have a 1928 Dictator and the speedometer cable at the gauge end, appears to be broken. Nothing is visible into the housing. Having never repaired a cable before, will I be looking for something special, or are these cables common? I would think the cable end that goes into the speedometer has a specific end. Anyone replaced their before that can give me some direction. Thanks for any reply!!
