  • Voltage Regulator Problem?

    Friday my 52 Commander had a completely dead new battery. Thought I left a light on or something. Charged it, ran the car 8 miles and 3 hours later, dead battery. Recharged the battery again and found 15A of current when the car is shut off. During trouble shooting I removed the BAT wire on the regulator, and the current draw disappeard. Ran the car again and noticed the car's amp meter register full charge (when the engine RPM was high enough.) Shut the car off and checked the current draw and found 15A. This time I whacked the regulator with a screwdriver handle (that's one of the uses of a screwdriver, right?) and the current dropped to 0. So, I suspect a bad regulator. Should I just replace it, or is there a way to fix the regulator and still be able to trust it. Car is still 6V.

    You could try cleaning the points that might be sticking, but I'd swap it.

      Take it apart and clean up the points. Check that they operate freely. Chances are, the regulator you have is going to be of better quality than the new one you'll get. (just MY opinion)

        The points on the bat side move freely but it looks like the top contact isn't flat but comes to a point. The points don't look very clean or shiney either. Could corrosion or a lack of flatness cause it to stick?

          I'd use a point file to square up the contacts and keep an eye on things for a while.

            I have a 54 pickup that the mechanic is telling me that he can't get the voltage regulator rebuilt, so has to find a new one, and hasn't been able to find one for the past 3 weeks. Does anyone know where to find a 12V voltage regulator that will work in my truck

                Did you try "exciting the field" when you replaced the parts?

                  IF you don't have a shop manual, one would help. It has a good section on vcharging systems.
