I inastalled an aluminum radiator in my Avanti and have a problem with the fan being too close to the new radiator. The new radiator is thicker than the original so I had to buy a 15 inch fan to get enough clearnce and even then it is only about 3/8" clear. I went to the swap meet in Hudson Wisconsin and purchased a used Studebaker original fan clutch. I took the other fan clutch off the engine and found that the the one from the swap meet is not as tall so now I have a little more than a 1/2" of clear between the fan and the radiator. The clutch that I took off the car was from SI and I hate to say it but I think that it was a piece of junk from almost day one. When I took it off, it had no resistance when I would turn it and it has only around a thousand miles on it. The used clutch is stiff when first turning it and gets easier after you turn it awhile. Maybe I got a defective one from SI?

New Water pump/original clutch tech note:
Some of the new "HD" water pumps will not fit an original clutch on Viscous drive equipped Larks and Hawks (usually these are A/C equipped or Supercharged) because they were made to fit the reproduction clutch.
When I called to ask about this problem I was told " who has an original clutch anymore?"
THE FIX: grind the end of the water pump shaft until it is flush with the edge of the hub.............
I realise this is an Avanti, so the long nose Avanti only, water pump should NOT be affected, only the H.D. V-8 Pump for non-Avantis.Last edited by (S); 09-28-2011, 02:36 PM.
