Real Horsepower.....64 Daytona

I know we talked about his or something related,
but my cousins, from Leipzig, DE, are over visiting
for the 1st time and while we were discussing cars,
they actually drove a "Trabant" [}] for 6 years
before the wall came down, asked about the horse
power on the 259 V8....I had to hedge a bit as I
know the manual says 40.6....so what is the real
horsepower[?]

Yes they were John, very lucky....though as soon as the
wall came down, they upgraded to an Opel, very quicky,
and are now on their 2nd Opel. They complain about the
price of gas just like the rest of us...6 Euro's per liter.

Make that 180 hp w/2 bbl, 195 w/4bbl and dual exhausts.

Thanks Paul for the Hp update....forgot about the
exchange rate, but then it changes almost everyday
and the USA is a bargin right now..considering that
a new pair of Wranglers or Levis cost about $75 to
$80 a pop, with a 22% tax built in Leipzig....

Please excuse my bad answer to conversion of six euros /liter to $/gallon.
I assumed a liter as a gallon which is very wrong. If petrol is really six euros/liter.
then since there are 3.8 liter in a U.S gallon,six Euros is $8, then the fuel cost is $29/gallon and even Santa Barbara at $3.97 for premium is cheap!!! I wonder how much of that is government tax. I will bicycle and or walk at that price!!

I thot we were talking about REAL HP.

In the Feb '56 Issue of Motor Trend, they compare the '56 210hp 289 to the '55 175hp 259. They state that the 289 puts out 89 road hp at 3200 (84 mph) The 259 has 82 @ 3200 (80 mph). And remind me not to move to Leipzig!

That's the one. Ultra low quality, bare bones, plastic body...

A few years back they had to address a serious problem with the carcasses of these cars... being a certain type of plastic, they couldn't figure out any way to recycle them, and they were becoming a real issue.

The solution: they developed a bacteria that would eat that type of plastic; then dug a huge concrete-lined pit, put the bodies and bacteria in together, and let nature go to it...

Never heard how that worked out...
