    I recieved a new rotor today for my '56 V8 259. I installed it and have spark to the cap. I can't get spark in the plugs. I loosened the distributor bolt and, with the rotor at TDC, I moved it back and forth to see if the #1 wire would show voltage. None. I also tried it whilst turning over the engine first, nothing there.

    Does anyone have a picture of one of each? If I did have the wrong one, would it fit in so well and not work[?][?][?][?]

    Yes, it's getting fuel, air etc,etc, etc... JUST NO @*+!!*** SPARK!!!

    Could it be the new Rotor? Is it possible I was sent the wrong one? The '56 Hawk has a different number than the '56 V8. What would be the difference? I mean, it fits right on and seems right. But no spark gets to the plug.

    Another thing. I know the resistance block should get rather warm, but should the wiper motor? Whilst I was going through my check list I brushed against it several times. After a while, with the motor off and the key on, the wiper motor got hot to the touch. I turned on the wipers and they worked fine. but the motor is hot. Is this normal?

    No Ron; the wiper motor should not be hot, sounds like your wiper switch is bad and not turning off. Are both high and low speeds working? It may be always getting power to low or High and not running.

    To check that you put a test light on the high and then the low terms of the switch with the test light grounded, and the Ign. to "ON" or "ACC" if it lights with wiper Sw. in OFF position the switch is bad. Also there should not be power to the switch with the key off.

      Oh, this is going to be such.... fun. I just love trying to get to that switch. Okay, well, I'll just unplug the wiper motor for now. Right now my focus is getting the blessed car running.

        So you're saying that if you pull the coil wire from the center of the distributor cap and hold it near a grounded metal object while cranking the engine, you get a good rapid spark? Then you put the coil wire back in place and hold a plug wire near ground while cranking and get no spark at that time?

          Don't know if the wrong rotor will fit on the shaft or not, but if you are running a non-window Delco distributor, its rotor should have a rather large round top. Most if not all of those rotors have a piece of 1/8 inch diameter carbon rod resting in an exposed grove pointing out toward the tip. If that rod is missing that's your problem. That rod can also become dislodged in use, so its always a good idea to secure it in place with a drop of something like JB Weld.

            Okay, then there's something else wrong. DRAT! Well, maybe not. Still, there's no spark getting to the cylinders. Ugh! I've been through this before! One would think I'd remember.

              Try replacing the condenser. Happened to me once--condenser went south--no spark.

                I agree, make sure the condemser is 'A-OK'. Also, make sure the small wire that connects to the points via a wire that comes through the distributor housing is not grounded.

                  If clunk is getting a nice hot spark out of the primary coil wire, then the points, condenser, etc. are working properly. The only thing that is left is for this spark to be "distributed" to the proper plug via the distributor cap, rotor, and plug wires. It would have to be one of these items.

                    Um, how do I tell if the condenser is bad? I mean, it's not like the Thanksgiving turkey with the popup timer, telling me that it's bad (scratches head in confusion)[)].

                        I would doublecheck the rotor number you received as it sounds to me from what I have read here that the rotor is not distributing. Maybe you received one for the Packard engine used in Hawks in 56 by mistake.

                          I found out what the problem was. It seems that the Mexican made rotors have a slightly longer contact point than the NOS ones. I wondered why the contact terminals on the distributor cap were scored. Everything worked so I just shrugged and figured, "if its not broke, don't fix it." Well, now I have to use the Mexican rotor with this distributor cap. So, for now, I think I'll just get another cap, as I already have two NOS rotors.

                            Clunk you could try filing down the end of the rotor a little, getting another cap may or may not solve the problem Thats no doubt whats breaking your rotors they are hitting the cap.
