  • Frame / Springs: Which coil spring?

SI sells both the #526122 HD coil spring and the #1561664 coil spring. The folks at Coil Spring Specialties sell what I assume are the same springs but a little more expensive.

Which of these springs would give the best ride on a 1957 Silver Hawk with a 289 V8, automatic transmission, and no A/C? I am also replacing the front shocks with Gabriel #82087. Any opinions would be appreciated. Thanks

Not to be rude, but didn't we cover this already?

    To re-cap~

#526122 is a h/d spring for '56 sedans with AC (I goofed in the other post, sorry)
and #1561664 isn't even in the book for '57!!! You'll have to look it up in another I guess.

I think you need to order something from CCS to fit your needs.
They will make whatever you ask them too- they even have Stude part numbers!!!
One size does NOT fit all...

      StudeDave57,
Actually, the question is still valid. Other than Warrlaw1, No one has commented on their experience with either spring. SI has recommends the #1561664. Coil Springs Specialties say the 526122 is A HD spring and the 1561664 is longer and much lighter. The only way I know how to decide which is best is to hear from someone who has experience with these springs. Hopefully someone who has experience with either spring will tell me what they think. I am not looking for springs for a custom application as you did. As you suggested in an earlier post I am trying to "research" these two springs to find out what others think about their ride.

I suppose it is, but I think you missed my point. CSS will make whatever you ask them to. Give them a part number and it's yours. Break out your parts book and see for yourself~ those two part numbers are not listed for a '57 Silver Hawk. Can you use them? Sure, but it sounds to me that you're looking for stock- and those ain't it...

af, Everybody has different preferences in ride. What I think is soft you might think is too hard. The best thing to do is ask yourself, what do I think of the ride and the ride height. Remove the springs and put them on a spring checker. I have seen too many springs that come out of the car and they are not within 20 or 30#'s of each other. After you have checked yours then you can go heavier or lighter. But the main thing is when all the weight of the car is on the front end the lower a-arm has to be parallel to the road.

You might want to read all the posts in this recent thread about coil springs before you decide.............
