First I would like to say hello to every one my name is Eric Larson and my wife is linda hence cowgirl. Linda won the eleanor blume award back in 2007. The car in question is a 1963 hawk with a four speed , power disc prakes and power steering. The car also twin traction, but a two barrel carb and single exhaust. The transmission shifter has up to 6inches of play in between the gears and my question is can this be rebuilt. The 2nd question is this car has set for over ten years and I would like to know if the engine will come back to life. The compression was 95 pounds when I first started it up and now after 4 hours of running it is up to 125 pounds. The engine blows blue smoke but is fifty % less now than when first started. I purchased this car from RJ patty who bought the car new in nov 1962 from a dealership in ohio. I have all the paperwork and manuals from day one. Last but not least the car has 135,000 on it and the engine # is P98032 AND BODY NUMBER IS 63V-I3401. I just took it to its first studebaker meet and it ran and looked good showed it to brian curtiss and james and stephanie bell from the whatcom county chapter this last sunday. Thank-you for any input.

'Welcome to SDC. You've got a nice car.
1. The Studebaker OEM 4-speed shifter is the worst piece of junk ever put on a car. It can be made less bad, but it can't be made good. If you are the handy type, a Hurst shifter will make the car twice as nice to drive.
2. Guaranteed, the valve stem seals on your engine are bad. The seals can be replaced with the engine in the frame, again, if you are handy and have a Studebaker shop manual and use the search function here. New seals will cut your oil consumption by half.
3. Change the oil and filter a couple of times. Older engines always have a lot of crud to get out.
Have fun.
