  • Clutch / Torque Converter: Clutch Cables?

There are upper and lower clutch cables (1/8" cable) on my 1948 Studebaker Commander. The upper clutch cable goes from the clutch pedal to the pivot on the frame, and the lower cable goes from the pivot to the transmission. The upper cable is frayed and broken, but it is held together by cable clamps.

I'd like to install a new upper cable, but I can't find the part number for that cable. The 1948 Commander "Complete Engine and Chassis Parts" book that I have shows a rod instead of a cable.

Does anybody know anything about these clutch cables? Joe

Somebody jerryrigged these cables to replace the rod.
Studebaker never used cables for the clutch.
Look at page 32 of you parts manual.

Thanks, Robert. The thought that the clutch cables were somebody's bright idea never entered my mind. It should have, though. I've looked at enough '47, '48, and '49 Studebakers trying to find a clutch cable. All of them had rods. The parts manual showed a clutch rod, and I didn't even tumble then. My thinking was that Peter Studebaker and his four brothers got drunk and put clutch cables on a few 1948 models just to see how they would work.
