  • Engine: Stupid Question time on 232 Paint

Ok I know that the 232 block is a Dark green but is the Valve Covers, Valley Pan, Oil Pan, Oil Filter, Oil Filler tube support bracket and Oil Filler cap painted semi gloss black. Is their anything else I should know. . .how about the transmission? And the over rive units etc.

We are trying to detail a engine that needs attention to just the details on a 53 Commander Coupe

Also need to know what decals and such.

They painted the engine, Bellhousing and Trans. completely assembled all Green except the Oil Filter, there is usually overspray of Green on parts of it's Oil Filler Pipe to Fram Filter Bracket, Stude. Bracket, Electrical parts were Black, also Oil Cap, & Air Cleaner, and they masked the Valve Covers, they were all gloss Black, only SOME cars had Black Fan Blades & Olive Oil Caps, every part of the basic assembled Engine/Trans. Assy. was Olive Green.

Factory installed Oil Filters were Fram Orange with Black lid and surround Ring (Bracket), and Dealer installed were all Black.

Decals were on the Oil Filter, Air Cleaner and Wiper Motor, a Red warning tag was on one Gen. Terminal, no other Decals anywhere. Radiator overflow tubes had an Anti-Freeze Tag.

Thanks for posting Rick, and Rich for answering. I'm detailing my '54 commander engine right now and was not sure about some details. I repainted my crank pulleys and dampner green after Rich pointed that out in an earlier post. I painted my oil cap green, my power steering pump, bracket and pulley green, the resivor black .
Is that correct? I'm not sure what color to paint the fan blades or the generator brackets. Advice and corrections welcome.

            Rick,
Every original or restored to original 232 I've seen has a green intake manifold. I'm 99 percent sure green is correct. Someone will confirm for us,maybe after the Gettysburg meet.

My original 51 Commander intake manifold was not painted, raw cast iron from the factory.

Exhaust manifolds yes, they were bare with some green Engine Enamel overspray, but nobody wants RUSTY Manifolds on a nice car these days when there now are alternatives, like cast Iron Gray, High Heat 1200 degree Manifold paint.

As far as the Intake being bare, I don't think ONE wrong car, should be the standard for anything.

All factory examples I have seen were Engine color, that does not mean that SOME were not Black.

I have said before here, that my guess is on SOME small parts SOME of the time, if the line was running low on them, they would just send a driver over from Plant 8 International Parts Depot across Town with a load of "spares" from Parts stock until their supply arrived, a quick and simple fix when someone screwed up. And of course these parts destined for Warehouse and Dealer stock and shipping sometimes did differ from Production Parts.

Thanks Rich, I'll paint them green. I'm dropping the starter and gen. off to be rebuilt Monday, I'll leave them black.
