  • Cool/Heat: 62 Hawk Radiator - who has them?

Stude Int'l does not stock them. Internet is not helpful.
Local radiator shops are also not helpful - their words: "We can probably make one, but its gonna cost you an awful lot." Gee thanks....

ANy suggestions on where to get one? 62 GT 289 manual
My Hawk was in storage for 35 years before I got it and its certainly full of crud.

As always, thanks for helping those of us new to Studes.

Tanks and headers are the problem. I found some at a radiator supply co. in St. Louis Mo. several years ago. They said that they were the last ones they had or had access to. I know, check with Bob Helm. He is a Stude genius, and has a ton of used stuff, and he was parting out a 62 GT. His cell phone no. 214-364-9740.

Take the radiator out and have a radiator shop give you their opinion. It may just need a cleaning. The worst it could need is a recore. If you find another radiator it will be used and likely need work .

Can't believe there are not proficient radiator shops within a couple dozen miles of Chicago. I live in central Pa, equal distance from nowhere, and have three shops within shouting distance that can recore Studebaker radiators.
Maybe worth 110 mile trip to South Bend. While you're there, visit the Studebaker National Museum and SI, South Bend.

This thread has one idea for a radiator:

            Proud NON-CASO

I do not prize the word "cheap." It is not a badge of honor...it is a symbol of despair. ~ William McKinley

If it is decreed that I should go down, then let me go down linked with the truth - let me die in the advocacy of what is just and right.- Lincoln

            GOD BLESS AMERICA

            Ephesians 6:10-17
            Romans 15:13
            Deuteronomy 31:6
            Proverbs 28:1

              Thanks guys.
Appreciate it.Right now, the old crate is hotter than Halle Berry.

Might be worth the ride to SOuth Bend (or just crating and shipping it)
Whats the name of the place in S.B.?

I'll have it cleaned it out first, but I wanna be prepared if its toast. WIfe wants car outta her side of the garage and back to the off-site storage. I dont blame her.

The radiator shops around here are all about late models. I think it reflects the trend in the industry that is shifting to a big box or internet-based retail model. Only a handful of old time autoparts stores are left in our fair city by the lake, there is only one Speed Shop left on the north side of Chicago, and the majority of body shops only want insurance work. We all have heard it: "Youve got a what - never seen one of those"

GIven my above comments, I think I just turned into my father......

Remember you live in the Snow Belt where vehicles; especially older ones simply rot away. Here in Arizona; there are quite a few places that still understand the old stuff since even a Chevy Vega (yes, there are a few still on the road) lives forever-----------till the sun burns off the paint and the hood, roof, etc. rust------------yet, the undercarriage bolts loosen right up with no PB Blaster needed.
                --------------------------------------

Sold my 1962; Studeless at the moment

                Borrowed Bams50's sigline here:

"Do they all not, by mere virtue of having survived as relics of a bygone era, amass a level of respect perhaps not accorded to them when they were new?"

The longer you wait ...the longer you WILL wait!!! This time of year most good "radiator shops" are backlogged with air conditioning repair jobs.

                  Good Luck!!!

I am in the same pickle myself. I have a two row that is great, but in the recent really hot weather we have had, I had vapor lock while waiting in line for gas at Costco in my 64 Cruiser. I had purchased a 3 row radiator last fall off of Studebakerswap.com had it checked at a local radiator shop and then installed that in Feb. Only problem was that the used three row sprung a leak, so had to put the old two row back in. This week I took the holey 3 row back to the radiator shop and was told that the radiator had rusted from the inside out. So the radiator shop would look into re-coring mine. Went in today and was told they don't make the bottom portion of your upper tank any more so I can't help you. ARRG! I am going to try a different radiator shop! I want it to stay looking original, but also want to drive the car daily and next year add AC.
