  • Rocker arms clattering again

Is it 'normal' for the valves to go out of adjustment in only a few hundred miles?

I adjusted them not that long ago, and now 2 or 3 were really starting to clatter rather loudly after driving for awhile and getting the motor up to temp......they are nice and quiet at start up, though.

So I pulled the valve cover on the passenger side (motor still nice and hot) and found #2 & #8 to have nearly .032 valve lash. I brought them back to .025 and buttoned it up...now, it's reasonably quiet again.

Am I doing something wrong here or possibly missing a step? The half-inch adjusting nut(s) are self-locking aren't they?....that is, there isn't some way of actually "locking" them in position?

The nuts sometimes will lose their interference fit and work loose. They should be very hard to turn unless they are worn out.

I have a similar problem. Has anybody tried "red" loctite on these?

If I were to use the Loctite . It would be the Blue. The Red is just what it says. A thread locker, will need heat to break loose.Like JDP said they should be hars to move. May need to replace them.

Oh, no no no...no Loctite...I wanna be able to take it apart when/if the time were ever to come. Besides I'm not all that crazy about introducing a foreign substance (which hardens) into the path the oil takes.

So, to save me the time in researching this matter of replacing the worn locknuts, I presume all I have to do is undo the rocker-arm shaft assy? Any particular words of wisdom in regards to this sort of venture?

          Thanks in advance,

          Karl
