I have a 1956 studebaker president classic 4 door. It has a 289 v8 with an automatic transmission. The shifter linkage seems to be in working order and the transmission fluid level is at proper level. It shifts through all gears but has no reverse. When put in reverse it doesn't make any noise and nothing happens, its just like being in neutral. Do you know what it could be? Before I take the tranny out to be rebuilt...

The most likley problem is a broken rear band which is applied in reverse. If you try to start in manual low does it slip or barely move or not at all? Rear band is also applied in manual low. Also possible is a broken rear servo which can be fixed in car. Drop the pan for a better look. Lou Cote

I've had that same prob. All I had at the time was an old MoToR manual showing the transmission and suggested solutions. The bands seemed OK. (Adjustment was correct.) Cleaned the valve body, problem solved.
Lotsa alumininum-looking gunk in it. I had never cleaned a valve body before but I was poor and the MoToR manual had it just right. It kinda comes apart in sections. Just keep each section's parts together and clean one section at a time. Lotsa springs, valves and balls in it. Don't lose your balls!

1956 studebaker president, auto transmission no reverse
The tranny did not slip in low gear. I'll drop the pan and check it out. What should I look for?Originally posted by dynolou2 View PostThe most likley problem is a broken rear band which is applied in reverse. The way the linkage is set up on my DG200, I had a choice of having a solid parking pawl and searching for reverse, or the other way around (P and R being at opposite ends of the travel). I went with a solid engagement in Park. If reverse doesn't happen on the first attempt, I find nuetral and try again. Usually works on the second try.Dave Warren (Perry Mason by day, Perry Como by night)

Well that one is pretty easy to fix Dave, because it is not an internal problem like Steve's. Not having the full range of movement between Park and Reverse, is nothing more than bent linkage rods, bad lever grommets or collapsed Rear Engine Mounts.Originally posted by warrlaw1 View PostThe way the linkage is set up on my DG200, I had a choice of having a solid parking pawl and searching for reverse, or the other way around (P and R being at opposite ends of the travel). Thanks, Rich. The motor mounts were all new, but the linkage rods were not very well treated when the car was torn down. The project was moved four times over four years, so I found lots of things with an extra bend, or two. I'm amazed it's all together and in one place. Now that it's on the road, I have lots of time to find and correct. Great advice.Dave Warren (Perry Mason by day, Perry Como by night)

If the band is broken, pretty obvious when you drop the pan, tho not very likely. The ends are loose and will wiggle around, so it feels broken.Originally posted by presidentsteve View PostThe tranny did not slip in low gear. I'll drop the pan and check it out. What should I look for?
If worn, sometimes just adjusting it will work. If nothing works, then you are either looking at dropping the trans to replace the band OR getting one of those cheapo bands with very little lining that is meant to only get the customer out the door and never see him again. Called a 'snap band'.
I bought this one but decided on an overhaul instead.

If this is a Borg Warner rather than the previously mentioned DG transmission then the no reverse can in many cases be due to the front clutches locking up together. When selecting reverse the locked up front clutches do not release & the auto is technically locked in two gears when reverse is engaged. I have struck it many times over the years.
