  • Fuel System: Fill Tube Removal

    Hi All: I am the new owner of a 1950 Champion Starlight Coupe. 30 Year barn storage. As of yet I do not have any books on the car but am waiting on a shop manual from the Museum.
    Q1: is there any easy/recommended way to replace the rubber hose from the gas fill pipe to the tank ?

    FYI: I traded an '89 Corvette Convertible in excellent shape for this car and I took a bath...... But I love it...

    Go to your local parts house they have rubber hose to replace that hose, it is needed to absorb vibration between the body and the frame. Take your old one as an example of what you need. My 55 coupe needed one very easy to replace. The cost for my 10" piece of hose was about twenty($20.00) dollar but well worth it. Good luck

        Thanks but I need to know how to REMOVE the hose. Seems almost impossible to get at.....

          Accessible from under the car.

          I would be surprised if your local FLAPS has the necessary hose. It is slightly angled and, if you use a piece of straight fuel hose it will kink and prevent fuel free flow to the tank. Contact a Studebaker vendor for the correct hose. Avoid a headache.


          Unclamp from the tank, unclamp from the filler neck, remove or loosen the bolt/clamp from the fuel neck inner fender housing. Pull neck up in to the housing. Install new hose with new clamps. Shove neck down from housing. Tighten new clamps. Tighten bolt/clamp from the fuel neck inner fender housing.

            Has anyone actually done this ? I find myself having to remove the bumper and the splash panel in order to gain access to the tank. Is there something I am missing or an easier way to do this ? Thanks Frank from Kansas

              I recently replaced this hose on my 52 which would be similar. I wound up removing the splash panel for access and even after doing that struggled for 2 hours getting the old one off and the new one on. I have a hose removal tool which is a bent pick type tool that can get under the hose to work it loose. In order to get the new one on I lubricated it with brake fluid. When done I needed first aid for the numerous cuts on my arms! It is best to remove the filler neck first and reinstall it last. As was said it is a special hose with a slight curve. I purchased mine from Studebaker International.Hope this helps.
