  • Transmission / Overdrive: 3 speed with O.D.

Were the car and pickup bellhousing bolt pattern the same for a 3 speed w/od transmission?

I can only speak about early models (1951 - 1956). The bolt pattern for the transmission and engine are the same, but the bellhousings themselves are different. The 55 259 that I have, with truck bellhousing and 3-speed transmission from a 1955 pickup have the same pattern on both ends as the pattern on the 1951 commander passenger car bellhousing. That's all I know about, newer models may be different.

Of the same year, yes, the transmission bolt patterns were the same for car and truck. That doesn't mean they'll interchange, even though the bolt pattern is the same. For instance, the '57-58 GH with the T85 uses a long tailshaft transmission. The V8 pickups with the T85 use a short tailshaft transmission.

No '59-'66 cars are going to have the H.D. T-85 3 speed O.D. Trans. like the Truck T-89, so the Standard '58 & on T-86E 3 speed O.D. Trans. bolt pattern will not match.

Rich is never wrong, so I'm going to check mine again,

but last I looked, all my post-'57 T86s have the same bolt pattern as my T85s and T10s (yes, except the '61 T10).

Some T-86's must have been used in later V8 cars as I recall pulling one out of a 63 4 dr sdn many years ago (259 engine). It was an original low mile car at the time - just rusted out.

Yes, and Rich agrees. What he was trying to say is all the '59-66 V8 3-spds were T86s. None of them came with T85s.

Wasn't there also a T-90 used in some early V-8 pickups?
