  • O/D Issues 60 Lark

Been driving Molly the Lark wagon daily and getting a real kick out of it! I've got an issue with the trans. that surfaced yesterday, and am looking for info (yeah, I know, manual; don't have one yet[:I])

Was on my way home last night when the O/D developed a slight whine; if I kicked it out of O/D with the throttle the whine went away till it went back into O/D... about 10 miles from home it suddenly started surging and howling; pulled over and stopped and pulled the O/D handle out; worked fine rest of the way home- no noises.

Today I headed out leaving the O/D handle out... seemed OK at first, but when I let off the gas in gear it grinds... under acceleration no noise. If I push in the clutch and coast, no noise in gear or out...

Obviouslt there's a problem with the O/D; any idea how bad, and does this mean the trans. itself is hurt?

Also- I have another O/D trans. from a 59 Lark flat 6; is it the same trans?

from a 59 Lark flat 6; is it the same trans?

Only if Molly is too a six.

First thing I'd do is change the oil in both transmissions. (there may not be any)

Buy one quart of 30 wt non-detergent, and two pints of STP. Mix together and fill first the OD then the Transmission itself.

Take it out with the cable pulled out. Drive to where you can stretch its legs, stop, push the cable in and accelerate through the gears. If it starts to howl, stop, pull out the cable and drive home.

Here my advice falters. Either find someone to rebuild the transmission, or replace it with another used one.

I'm not transmission expert but when you lose a gear any of them its time for a rebuild. Sorry to hear about your tuff luck.

V-8 transmission is T86, Champion six transmission is T96; cannot be swapped.

Let's hear some more specifics. Doesn't want to shift all the way into reverse? Shifts, but nothing happens when you let the clutch out?

Not good... lever goes in just fine, just grinds when clutch is let out [V]

                  I'd be lookin' for another tranny.[V] You need a '58 or later T-86 W/OD

Update: Quick look shows linkage working fine, engages fine by hand with linkage removed... forward gears work right till you decelerate, then grind like h***; if I stop dead and start out again, it'll be fine till I decelerate again... all of which adds up to [xx(]RIP[xx(]

When I got home Molly spoke to me; she looked glum and said, "I know I'm not good-looking and popular, and I'm sorry I messed up my trans.; if you wanna send me to the crusher I'll understand..." I gave her a little pat on the fender and said, "Hey, don't worry, old girl; it's not your fault- and we still love ya... we'll have you back in shape in no time- no big deal!" She seemed a little happier after that.......

Reminds me of my Doberman who lived to 14 years... the last few years of his life he had bad hips, and became incontinent... he was super-bright and of course housebroken; so when he'd have an accident in the garage he'd always be so upset and ashamed; knew he wasn't supposed to go inside, but couldn't help it. I always comforted him as I cleaned up.

So now it is with old Molly the Lark.

I thought mine might not work, it's only good to 57 I guess without a driveshaft swap.
