  • Frame / Springs: vin# location?

    Hello.

Im ronni from norway, and i just starting working on my 53 champion.
The car has been in the family for 35years,standing still, waiting to get rebuild.

Wonder if the frame has a vin# stamped onto it? (if so,where is it located?)
or is it just the plate in the driver door?

cant find a "stamped" number on the frame, but want to ask you guys, just in case.

    hoping someone has an answer.

    regards
    ronni

The official number is on the stainless plate on the front opening of the driver's door.

There was (when it left the factory) a lightly stamped number (same number) on the bottom flange of the rearmost frame crossmember, just behind the fuel tank, on the right side of the car. The numbers were as tall as the flange is wide. about 3/4 inch or 1.8 cm tall. Most of these numbers have been lost due to surface rust, they were very lightly stamped.

And Welcome to the best Auto forum on line.

For 1953, most states used the engine number for identification (VIN). The plate on the driver's A-pillar has the Serial Number that is now usually used for an identification number (VIN).
There is no actual VIN number as on modern cars.
As has been stated by Tom B., the S/N was stamped on the rear crossmember, but now can only be found on very rust free examples.

        WELCOME ...to the SDC Forum!!!

Do you know where this Studebaker Champion was built? ...in USA? ...in Canada? ...or??? That just may have a bearing on where/how it was identified.

When I restored my '53 coupe I looked really close & even tried a paper & pencil "rubbing" of that rear crossmember... no sign of any number having beeing stamped there.
