  • Other: '59 Lark VI engine compartment

I am looking for references showing the locations of various under hood details such as solenoids, windshield washer, battery cables, harness routing, horns, etc. for the '59 flathead six. I have hood release, heater and wiper motor.

I can "sorta" help. I'm bloging the reconstruction of my '60 Lark (which is for all means and measures identical to the '59). A few posts back I used my camera phone to videorecord where everything bolted to the firewall. Here's a link.

Now, having said that, there are a lot of guys on tis site who have FINISHED Larks who could easily post the photos you need. I'm sure a few of them will come forward with time.

These are a few photos of a 59 Lark engine bay from before and after I pulled it and you might see what you are looking for.

Thanks JimC. That engine has been replaced with a 63 OHV. That OHV is now being replaced with a 63 259. I will have photos when things are done.

Thanks for the links but I live in dial-up land which is a very slow place for picture-heavy files.
Perhaps I should be more specific - can anyone help me out with placement and installation of '59 Lark horn and relay, oil filter (still the cannister? on the cylinder head or on the firewall?), and horn (rad frame?). Funny how hard it has been to nail these items for a '59.

Maybe these pictures from SkyBolt's link will help~

I don't see the horns (or an oil filter) but I believe that's the horn relay on the left.

BTW~ that's a good lookin' ride you've got there, Mr SkyBolt.

                Thanks StudeDave '57 .
The horns are located in the same place as any other Lark from those years, each side of the radiator bolted to the inner fender, unless it's like mine and it came with only one on the passenger side. http://rides.webshots.com/photo/2973...Dv?vhost=rides this pic shows it but I don't have time now to find out how you saved and posted those pics of mine.

On my '60 The driver side horn is located on the inner fender near the radiator and under the battery. The passenger side horn is mounted up high to the front panel, also near the radiator. The relay was bolted to the firewall, very nearly above the speedometer cable. Most of that shows up in the others' pictures above, but not knowing how slow your dialup is, that might take less time to read than to wait for the images.

Thanks all of you for this great info. The mounting holes haven't been altered so I can sus out most of their purpose from this. info Thanks again.

If you are asking me about the paint it is a mix of Dupli-Color engine enamel for the hot stuff, Dupli-Color exhaust high temp with ceramic for the manifolds, because of the heat, I also used the same for the entire exhaust piping, except the Magnaflow S/S muffler. The rest of the parts are done with Rustoleum. Some stuff was just done with the clear. It depends on which engine you are looking at because I only did the exhaust pipe after the OHV install because it was an NOS from SASCO, although I still had to media blast the surface rust of before painting.

If you were referring the question to someone else I'm sorry for the blurb.

I also edited a previous post in this thread because the horn was on the drivers side. Just a slip of the Australian drivers side wrong side of the car thing.

Admiring the engine work...really pretty....I have a 59 I am redoing as a daily driver....I worry about driving my nice '65 Cruiser to work... I teach 6th, 7th,and 8th grade kids with emotional problems, and they might do serious damage someday.....3pd/od, flatty 6...13 miles down the highway to work

Thanks again but it is mostly cosmetic. The Flathead is the original and the car had only 29K miles from new so all I did was clean it up, no major engine work except port matching and shaving .100" off the head. The OHV was a rebuilt 63 replacement from a 62 parts car, so again just a shave of the head and clean up of the seats. Of course new seals and gaskets all around. It seems all my time is spent cleaning, blasting, grinding and painting. Every thing you see that was painted, except the chassis, was a labor of love or else I'm an idiot, which my wife will attest to, but I can't leave the stuff until it's not going to need attention for another 50 years. That said, I change stuff quicker than I change my underwear. So keep back.

Thanks for the great input on relays, solenoid and horns. Any thoughts on the windshield washer gear (AC 2942 for '59). With the heater and duct on the right I suspect a centre firewall mount or off the battery hold down bracket...any ideas?
