  • Steering: Center pivot shaft nut torque

    I would like to know what the torque spec is on the center pin shaft nut? Thanks Moose

    Do you mean the castellated nut on the bottom of the assembly or the pinch-bolt nut at the top?

      The nut on the bottom of the assembly. Thanks moose

        I put all new bearings and o/ring and new shims but they say to tighten the nut to the proper torque.

          Hm. My shop manual ('59 - '64) doesn't give a torque spec for this nut. It says, in the reassembly instructions, that after you've used the shims to set endplay correctly, you can just cotter-pin the nut to lock it. Doesn't look like it needs to be torqued.

          Anyone else have a different take? Am I mis-reading this?

            Thanks for that info.I was reading about that from www.ncsdc.com/
            Technicalpages/Bellcrank/CenterPinRebuild.htm it said to torque it but did not give the specs. so i guess i will shim it up and make sure it is free and no end play it put the cotter pin in. Thanks Moose.

              Sounds like that's the ticket. Here's the direct quote from the manual:

              "Install the thrust washer and nut, then adjust by inserting shims between the lower thrust washer and the shaft until there is no end play. The shaft should, however, turn freely in the bearings. After obtaining the proper end play, lock the nut with the cotter pin."

                  What about the O-ring seal should it be on the top or at the bottom of the pivot pin mine is on top witch makes sense so the grease comes out the bottom.
