Check with Phil Harris (Fairborn Studebaker) at stude6@yahoo.com (937-878-1576).

Are you sure it is a Prestolite? The original in the '56 would have been a Delco. If it is a Prestolite, I don't think Pertronix makes one for the single point Prestolite. If it is a Prestolite and Phil doesn't have anything for it, I have a Crane unit that will fit if you are interested in that.

Pertronix info: The 1187LS is for the non window Delco distributor used on V8 Studes from '56 through '61 (and can be adapted to the '53 through '55's also if converted to 12 volt). Pertronix also has one for the 6 volt V8, '51 through '55) but I don't recall the part number but Phil has them.

The '60 and '61 Larks and trucks used the Window Delco and the 1181 fits those (the '60 and '61 Hawks used the non window Delco with 1187LS).

The '62 through '64 used the SINGLE point Prestolite. Pertronix did not make one for this distributor. The Pertronix 1584 fits the R engines that had the Prestolite DUAL point distributors.

Hope this helps clear it up.

The 6 volt (positive ground) units are Pertronix #1188P6

I installed one (No. 1188P6) in my '53 coupe last month. Had a bit of trouble, but the techs at Pertronix helped me until it was working. They also helped getting the OD wired correctly.
