  • Edelbrock carb: fuel line

    I'm finally putting on the new Edelbrock 1403 and I'm wondering how others have handled the pump-to-carb fuel line. The inlet is on the front of the WCFB and on the passenger side of the 1403, so a new line not only has to come up and across the intake, it has to wrap around to the far side of the carb. I dunno...seems like it won't be very purdy. If you've switched to an Edelbrock, what did you do? Post a pic if you have one.

    I just got my new Edelbrock mounted on the new manifold. Haven't got that far yet. I too am interested in seeing some suggestions.
    I'm thinking just wrapping the metal tube up the front driver's side of the engine, then across the top of the engine, then finishing it off with rubber hose and fuel filter.

      I fabricated a new fuel line and added a filter. Nothing interferes with the air cleaner or the linkage..

          Russell makes a fuel line that has a banjo fitting and has a port for a fuel pressure gauge. You need to put a slight bend in it to clear the manifold, but other than that it works fine.

            I used a Carter fitting for a 5/16 flare fuel line. I bought the fuel
            line with a flare on each end, and cut off one side to fit. Its easily
            bent by hand if you are careful. To clear the Edelbrock air cleaner,
            I had to bend it down sharply as shown.

                To further explain Toms fuel line method and also the way I do mine...

                You buy an extra long section of "brake line" (or fuel line!), along with some table salt. Use your imagination or a piece of wire to decide on how you want the line to be routed.
                Fill the tubing "tightly" with salt...and tape it off to contain the salt.
                Now you can easily bend the tube without kinking it. As long as you're not in too...big a hurry!
                Any round item can be used for the bend radius that is deired.

                A brake line flair tool will put a "single" flair at the desired point on the other end. The whole operation shouldn't take much longer that about 30 minutes.
                You can snake the line where ever you want it to go.

                Note: In my opinion....do not use more that just a coupla inches of rubber fuel line. I believe the NHRA says no more than 12" in any portion of the complete fuel system.

                  For the fuel line on Pete, I used a piece of the steel brake line and used one of those slide-over, spring style tubing benders (although I don't think it's really necessary to use a bender on brake line stock). I snaked the fuel line up from where the mechanical fuel pump would mount (I have an electric pump)- up between the two left legs of the pump manifold - past the back of the impeller's housing - up and over the front-most bolt of the intake manifold (I actually used that bolt to secure a clamp on the line). Then straight back to where it kicks up into a short bit of rubber line to the nipple on the carb.
                  The other lines off the carb - PCV, vac adv - and another vac supply to operate the cruise control - were all made from aluminum tubing I got from a local hardware store. It's back where the keep the coils of copper tubing and it's REALLY nice to bend and make things look a bit more tidy than a bunch of rubber lines!

                    Thanks for the great ideas and pics. It REALLY helps. I have a pretty decent bender. I'll let you know how it turns out.

                      I forgot about Spectre. they also sell one with a fuel gauge port, it's a dead ringer for the Russell one but a lot cheaper. Available at Pep Boys, if you have one nearby.

                        FYI update on the Spectre fuel line Nate and Leonard wrote about above:

                        The 2988 Leonard pictured is no longer available. The replacement is Spectre # 29883.

                        As Nate said, the current version has a fitting on the end with a port for attaching a fuel pressure gauge. It is threaded on the end for a straight or right angle hose barb fitting. $9.99 at your FLAPS.

                          BTW...
                          If you run this fuel line setup on a Stude intake with only a gasket, and not a spacer...
                          You may have to bend the down portion of the tube out a little to get it away from the heat crossover passage casting. Not a big deal, but worth keeping an eye out on....
                          Also... If you want to run a short rubber fuel hose up to the carb, you can get a marine banjo fitting for the edelbrock carb that will allow you to swivel the barbed end to your liking.

                            I'm using a .5" phenolic spacer and I've had to bend the horizontal leg ever-so-slightly inward so the fat end fitting nestles between the carb base and front intake runner. Here's what it's looking like so far. I'll finesse it when I get it on the car.
