  • Grease for new front bearings

    I've purchased new bearings for the front of both Bess and Ed ('56 wagon and '62 Champ). What Kind of grease should I use?

      I usually just use High Temp disc brake grease, I did bake when I had
      drums on the Hawk. The high temp stuff isnt going to harm anything.
      It just gives you that much extra room before the grease liquifies and
      starts oozing out the seals due to excessive heat.

        I've found that assuming anything with these cars is asking for trouble. My first assumption was, as you suggested Bob, wheel bearing grease. Then I remembered several other parts of the car that one isn't wise just using the average ersatz stuff one gets at FLAPS.

        So please forgive the aparently stupid question.[:I][8)] Just wanted to make sure.

          This is just my opinion, but I keep my grease gun loaded with Mobil 1 grease. That way I can use one grease gun to grease both suspension bits and wheel bearings (I use the cheezy little plastic bearing packer available at your FLAPS) and I don't have to stock two different kinds of grease. I also like Redline CV-2 but I like to use the same grease consistently, and most FLAPS don't carry Redline products.

            I have a question, Nate. If I start using Mobil 1, which is a synthetic, do I have to clean out all the old non-synthetic lube in the fitting first, or can I just displace it with the new stuff?

              I don't believe so, but read the package. I tend to clean out the bearings anyway before the first packing with fresh grease as all my cars have been "barn cars." I usually just soak 'em in a coffee can with a couple inches of gasoline, scrub with a toothbrush, and finish with a blast of carb cleaner. I figure anything remaining after that dries will get pushed out when I pack them. I also usually end up having to disassemble the kingpins as the thrust bearings almost always have seized rollers, so those get cleaned before regreasing as well. I have never "flushed" a tie rod end, not that I would even know how to do that.

              I know that the Redline stuff does recommend that you clean the bearings of all existing grease before packing.
