  • Just Starting?

    Pickup a m5 1947. I want to re wire it. Should I stay with the 6 volt system or convert to 12? Is it now a positive ground system? Where could I find a wire kit? Also it's a 3/4 or 1 ton with widow makers- is there something out there that will replace those. Its been setting for about 7 years, but it will turn over by hand. Flathead 6 with single carb.

    Opinion:
    'If' you are going for a good driving 'driver' Stude truck....
    I'd put in an aftermarket 12v wiring kit (Painless wiring, etc).
    Get the kit with a LOT of circuits, as it makes it easier to add things down the road.
    As far as split rims?
    Unless you stay with bias ply tires, you will have to look for something else to go to radials.
    Over on the truck forum, some guys have had their wheel centers welded into modern rims and they look, and work great.
    Get a carb kit...and a fuel pump kit, that are rated for the new ethanol mixed gasoline.
    Your 6v starter can handle the 12v load without too much trouble, as long as you don't crank it forever and a day.
    Spend your initial work time on the brakes. Get them right.

      Welcome aboard! Your system is indeed positive ground. Converting is a personal choice but if the wiring is good the as-designed 6V system works great and is more authentic. 12V is nice for audio, A/C, and other accessories but it is some work.

      Joining the Studebaker Driver's Club is highly recommended. It is a bargain for the resourses and information you get. To get a very good list of vendors visit http://www.studebakervendors.com/. Studebaker West does very good wiring harnesses for not a lot of $$$ using modern wire and materials. If you are a sticker for authenticity there are at least two companies that take modern wire and braid fabric over it to make new wiring harnesses that look just like stock. Visit http://www.ynzyesterdaysparts.com/ and http://www.riwire.com/. Of course this costs a lot more.

      When you say widow makers what particular fatal aspects of your truck are you talking about? With these old cars you have to be specific!

        Please keep us informed as you go forward... I have just received a M15-20 flatbed and I to have to rewire the whole truck. I am split on going to 12V or not.

          The old split rim wheels.
          You've no doubt seen the pipe cages at truck shops? Split rims were to be dismounted in those cages to keep the parts that may fly from causing a death in the family.
