  • Front Braike Noise

I swapped the right front drum on my 58 Hawk (11") and now there is a noise when
I make a turn. Not a steady rubbing noise, but more intermittent. Got me stumped.
My old drum had a high spot so I bought another (used) good used, put it on and
adjusted the brakes. Are there differences between these finned 11" drums that
could account for the noise? Thanks,

    Joe D.

Joe, check the flanged area of the brake backing plate, it may be slightly bent and rubbing on the drum flange when you make a turn. The drums should all be the same.

I would probably have any used drum lathed if there is enough meat to do so but, you indicate it's a noise when turning. You should be able to feel a drum issue even when braking straight.

Well I took everything apart again, I did see a place on the backing plate where it appeared something had rubbed. I hit it with the grinder,
had the drum turned, replaced the grease seal, which didn't look too good, and put everything back on. No noise, so all is well.
        Thanks to both you guys.
