  • Automatic transmission advice; new bearings, linings and bushings?

hi, rebuilding my '57 Golden Hawk transmission. The standard "kit" from Dave Edwards (Automatic Transmission Parts) does not include bushings or the ball-bearing, or lining.
If the parts "look ok", would you replace the bushings and bearing anyway? And if lining is still 'ribbed' and doesn't look damaged (not sure what 'burned' looks like, but doesn't look burned) would you have the bands relined too? The rear-band looks a little torn in one spot, think I'll send that in for relining at least, but not sure how to judge the bushings and bearing. I don't FEEL any slop at the bushings, but you can see where there is a color change from some wear (ie: not brand new with just a few miles on them). Do tranny shops regularly replace these items on a rebuild? Or is it just wasted money if they look OK? In my Model-A Ford tranny, I simply replaced everything, but a little easier and cheaper to do. :-)

From your photos I am unsure whether you have dismantled the clutch packs at this point & checked the softness or hardness of the piston seals re deterioration. Check where the metal seals on the shafts if they have worn the mating outer circumference contact point into the metal. This could tell you if the white metal bearings have suffered excess wear. You generally buy them seperately at an auto trans shop. That front band looks near new. Check the rear band contact to the metal whether that has bad hot spots otherwise I would just rough the friction material with fine emery cloth. I have found that relining the bands generally does not give a long working life like the original factory bands. Good luck.

thanks. I took the bands to the local tranny shop this afternoon and had him look at them. He strongly suggested I get them relined, didn't like the look of them... I spent some more time measuring and feeling fit with bushings, and going to replace a few of them too...
