  • steering box lube

looking for opinions as to acceptable lubes for ross steering boxes, specifically avanti. as the industry has moved toward synthetics, logic would point to them for our older cars also; then there could very well be the leakage problem. as usual, thanks for any and all input.

Get the tube o' lube from SI. Works in Ross and Saginaw boxes both, and is semi-solid so it will not exit old seals (much). Some balk at the price, but what else is there?

I've been using Shell Alvania 00 extreme pressure grease in my steering boxes. It is a semi fluid grease that is used in gear cases of farm equipment. I'm sure that other lubricant suppliers market a 00 grease too. Bud

Bud, what retailers are selling it? Parts stores, Wal-Mart, Tractor Supply, Victorias Secret?

I buy it from the local Shell lubricant supplier. I buy it in pails, but they may have it in tubes or smaller containers. I'm sure that anyone that sells tractor and farm supplies will have it in stock in smaller quantities and I'll bet that larger parts suppliers such as NAPA can get it. I don't believe that Victorias Secret carrys industrial lubes, but I guess you can ask. Bud

Cottin picker spindle lubricant. It is available at John Deere, Tractor supply, etc. Mystik also makes it. It is as good as it gets for
                this application.
