  • Wheels or Rims

I am purchasing a 1962 Studebaker Gran Turismo and need some info on wheels (Rims).

What other manufacturers wheels will fit this particular automobile? The car has the original drum brakes still installed.

The American 5 Spoke (Torque Thrust I think) wheels (can't change the rim without cutting and welding!!) will fit well.
    The 6" wide version.

Many Ford and Chysler product wheels will fit, especially those from larger, rear-wheel drive cars. The bolt pattern is 5 x 4.5". As Mike says, 6" width is perfect.

A search will turn up maybe fifty previous threads about wheel and offset recommendations and interchanges. Try it and get enough reading for a week.

TomB pointed out in another post that when changing to ford rims: "Replace the lug nuts. The Ford wheels have a 120 Deg included cone where the lug nut seats, the Stude wheel has a 90 Deg included cone. The Stude nut will seat at the very bottom only and soon the strain on the metal will start to open the hole. If you use a set of Ford lug nuts, with the matching cone at the bottom, they will lock the wheel properly." May be true for other brands.

Have a 3 3/4" back space on the '63 Hawk - Very, very close to the fender lip (Had to roll one fender out about 1/2"). Try fitting a 4" BS - Always try the rim and tire before buying,; different wheel BS and width will provide diff. clearance w/ diff. tire sizes (and they don't always like taking them back as a return, esp after tires have been mounted).
You might also try mid-1980's to early 2000 lincoln Towncar & Mark VII, plus full size Ford and (RIP) Mercury.

Put Cragar SS rims on my 62 Hawk for a cool, old skool hotrod kinda look.
Had no problem with them fitting on a Turner disk conversion - which i highly recommend.

Dont know where you are, but you can have my old Stude wheels if you want them.

Since I posted this I have done a lot of reading and research. Wheel (rim) size, backspace, offset, spacing and lug nut angle. There is bunches to know about beore I put those pretty chrome Cragars on that car.
Your input here has been very valuable and I thank you for it.

Here is what I have decided...Going to the Turner Disc Brake conversion (have the new parts as I type in my garage already) and Cagar SS rims (15X4.5X6). I beleive not only will it look good...but be very safe also.

I found out today that my GT's rims have a 4.25" bolt pattern...the question now from this wheel dummy is, how can a Ford rim at 4.5" bolt pattern fit safely?

I also have a 3.75" backspace. Problems, Problems, Problems!!!

My guess is that the conflict is the way you measured. Measure the 5 bolt wheels from the center of one bolt hole to the outer edge of the next not center to center. I don't know of a 4.25 bolt pattern 5 bolt although it quite possible.

Be careful of the Lincoln mags.

I put a set (dunno what year) on a '57 Classic to flat-tow it home. They fit the bolt pattern (used the Lincoln lug nuts on the right side, but no L-hand thread Lincoln/Ford for the left, had to use Studebaker. They looked like miniature nuts compared to the Lincoln.)

But the tires rubbed on the frame in hard left or right turns. Fortunately, was mostly straight road, so I got home with only a few probs. http://forum.studebakerdriversclub.c...ht=flat+towing The story cuts off in about the middle because of new Forum restrictions on old posts.
