  • emergency brake cable

    I took the emergency brake cable a loose today because it feeds though the driver's side support. I took the clevis pin out and pull it though, while I was under there I noticed the cable to the rear passenger wheel was on the ground, these cables are on the inside or outside of the drum? Are they hard to find? my emergency brake assembly is not frozen just the anchor it was connected to is that hard to come by?

    you mean the big pivoting arm underneath the car? shouldn't be too hard to come up with a "good used" one, or what you have can be disassembled and bead blasted.

    the cables pass through the backing plate towards the front of the car. Possibly you've lost one of the clips that holds it on (on the inside of the drum) you will have to pull the drum anyway to reattach. Worst case you will need a new rear cable because you'll need that swaged-on ball on the end if that is missing for whatever reason. If the housing is OK and you have a spare cable it is possible to do a functional repair by splicing the cable, but make sure that is OK with your state's safety inspection guidelines.

      If you're going to install a new replacement cable, there are a few issues with the repops that I found recently when doing mine. Check my blog for pictures and you'll see what I mean. Nothing a little grinding won't cure, but still good to be aware that the repops are not a "glove fit" out of the box.

        I ordered e-brake cable for my 61 Hawk from SI and it fit like a glove. No grinding needed!

          I talked with StudeRich about this. We think maybe it's because some cable stock is still NOS, while repops (like for later Larks with drums) have been redone. Guess it depends on what year and model you're working on.
