I was wondering if the numbers cast into the V8 camshafts were part numbers. Or are they casting numbers? I'm talking about the number on the end with the dist. gear. I have a stock cam from a 62 289 with the number 534131. The book shows this as the part number for a stock cam. I have another cam that has 1557663 on it. My avanti parts book shows this number as the part number for R1&2 cams. Is this camshaft an R2 cam? Thanks.

I think you answered your own question, some Studebaker parts do share the same part number as their casting number. If that cam has an Avanti part number on it as a casting number, it could not be anything else but an Avanti R1 & R2 cam!
