  • Break-in for 1950 2R10 Champion Engine

I am breaking in my recently rebuilt engine. I used the Studebaker International parts kit, which used 0.020" O/S Egge cast aluminum pistons and (as I recall) Grant cast iron rings. The tappets were badly worn on the shanks, so I included new ones. I installed a spin-on bypass oil filter.

Break-in oil is a standard 5W-30 (Chevron) plus a bottle of ZDDP additive from my local cam grinder. Before initial startup, I pressure charged the oil galleries and prefilled the oil filter cartridge. On startup, oil pressure came up instantaneously, and I idled the engine at 1,500 rpm for 15 minutes before shutting it down.

Most of the 300 mi (so far) driving has been 25-25 mph in the city, with occasional full throttle bursts up to 45 mph and full compression deceleration down the steepest hills I can find in town (not very steep). I think the rings are seated (no smoke on deceleration, acceleration, or blipping the throttle).

My plan is to drive the truck on longer trips (50-100 mi, varying speed 35-45 mph, and decelerating on compression down any hills I can find), until the total mileage is about 500. Then install a new filter and change oil to a diesel oil (Chevron 15W-40 Delo from Costco). On advice of our local cam grinder, I do not need to use ZDDP after break-in, as the stock cam is really mild. After break-in, I will assume I can cruise at a steady speed, say 45-50 mph, in recognition of the extremely low gearing of the 2R10.

Any comments for the good of the order?? Thanks!

You're being way nicer to that little truck than it has ever had in its' life. The plan you describe is perfect.
