  • flathead 6 linkage

    Here I am again !
MY 57 SILVER HAWK HAS A FLATHEAD 6 (185 I THINK). THE LINKAGE THAT GOES FROM THE ACCELERATOR ALL THE WAY TO THE CARB HAS ALOT OF PARTS. I THINK ONE PART OF IT ALSO MUST GO TO THE TRANS FOR THE PASSING GEAR. THE PREVIOUS OWNER HAS INSTALLED ONE HECK OF A RETURN SPRING TO RETURN THE CARB TO IDLE POSITION. THIS MAKES THE CAR TIRING TO DRIVE BECAUSE THE PEDAL IS SO STIFF----YOUR LEG GETS TIRED! A PRUDENT MAN WOULD SAY "PUT A LIGHTER SPRING ON" TO FIX THE PROBLEM. OF COURSE WHEN YOU DO THAT THE CARB WON'T RETURN TO IDLE. THE SYSTEM OF LINKAGE ARMS DO NOT SEEM TO BE BINDING UP OR ANYTHING-THEY'RE IN PRETTY GOOD SHAPE. THE CARB MIGHT BE PART OF THE PROBLEM. IT IS A LITTLE WORN. TO MAKE A LONG STORY SHORT, IT SEEMS TO ME THIS SYSTEM OF LINKAGE ARMS IS TOO MASSIVE WITH TOO MANY TURNS AND CONNECTIONS---THE MECHANICAL ADVANTAGE IS AGAINST YOU IN SEVERAL PLACES WITH LINKAGE ARMS POINTING ALMOST DIRECTLY AT EACH OTHER IN SOME PLACES. IT APPEARS THIS IS THE ORIGINAL DESIGN. CAN THIS EVER BE ADJUSTED TO BE EASY TO PUSH ?? OR IS THIS THE NATURE OF THE BEAST ? IS THERE A BETTER SOLUTION FOR THE FLATHEAD CARB SYSTEM? I WOULD PREFER TO REBUILD THE ENGINE IF I CAN SOLVE A FEW PROBLEMS LIKE THIS. AS ALWAYS --THANKS IN ADVANCE--DAN WARD

Have you TRIED disconnecting the linkage from the carb to see how freely it works? With what you're describing, there's obviously something wrong somewhere. This setup works good and freely IF everything's in decent shape.
You suspect the carb - maybe your suspicions are right. Take the carb off and see if it's binding on return. While aggravating, this is a minor problem in my opinion. Seems small justification to dissuade you from rebuilding the engine!
Further, put up a photo of the linkage arrangement. Maybe we'll recognize that something's been rigged that you might not recognize as bogus.
