  • 51 Champion Fuel Pump Glass Bowl cleanining

Good afternoon. Got a lot of other stuff done, and want to empty the sediment out of the bowl before I fire it up. I do have an in-line filter ahead of the bowl, but do want to clear the crud out. How do I drain it? It's not leaking, so I don't want to take the bowl off if it has a drain cock that I'm not seeing (feeling, actually).

    Regards,
    Clarence

No what your feeling is the nut to loosen the bowl and take it out and that is just what you want to do.

A word of advise is to hang on to that sucker so you don't drop it. They dont have those at napa and they are not that easy to come by. and you would be bumming getting it all ready to drive and not having a bowl on it, preventing it from running.

actually the champion ones are easy(ish) to find, but lord help you if you need a Carter bowl for a V-8 pump! (I have a couple, but it took me a while to find them.)

I am not positive about it, but I think the glass bowls and gaskets used on lots of old farm tractors will interchange with the ones on fuel pumps and the old glass bowl fuel filters for cars of the era. Still available at farm supply stores.

I guess I should go through my packed away dishes as I think that I still have a dozen of those glass sediment bowls that I was using as shot glasses.....

Thanks, guys. I couldn't tell if it had a drain cock or what, and with the distributor out, I don't want to jack it up or move it around to get underneath.

Thanks to all. I just changed the whole pump, since I don't know how old it is and I found 2-3 teaspoons of larger scale rust in the bowl. (The first thing I did to the guy on buying it was install a clear in-line filter, so none of it was recent rust). But it was a challenge to get of and on, since one of the mounting bolts is a HOLLOW bolt with one of the oil filter hoses attaching to it. My oil filter canister/bracket looks like the pics of any other 51 Champ, but mounted on the passenger side. The upper hose from the oil filter canister goes through the hollow bolt on the fuel pump, the lower hose on the filter canister goes to a hole in the engine block down low and way in the back of the engine. I'm guessing the upper hose is the supply, feeding oil from the cam at the fuel pump (this was a smaller diameter hose), and the larger one from the bottom of the canister returned oil to the oil pan? Anyone else ever seen this configuration?
