Oil dipstick question

    My wife uses a similar method to mark for the desired level, but she uses lipstick[}]

    Dip sticks can vary from car to car. On a production line, most everything from door gaps to...dip sticks, will have a tolerance. I haven't relied on a dip stick to give me accurate information since I was 20.

    What I do, especially when I first get a car is to change the oil and fill with the correct amount of oil per the service or owners manual. It it's 5 quarts, it's five quarts. THEN I check the dip stick. Where ever the oil level is on the dip stick is FULL. I do not cater to a item that was built to a plus or minus standard.

    Steven; the 23 3/4" is correct. The oil could be building up at the back of the valve cover, and may eventually drain down really confusing you! The '57 engine has a very small single drain hole at the rear of the head, which on a seldom driven car can plug up with sludge and slow the draining and cause leaks.

    These holes were opened up on later engines, and some older ones have been modified to drain better.

    You order the newer type neoprene valve cover gaskets and (8) Grommets BEFORE you remove the valve covers for cleaning drains, torquing heads, valve adjustment and new gaskets.

    Hi everyone,
    When I came across this thread. Now it is a good time for me to ask a question about the oil dipstick from V8 289 engine in my '57 Silver Hawk. After I changed oil engine and oil filter cartridge few days ago for first time since I inherited this car from my mom six years ago. I was puzzled why did it took almost seven quarts of oil motor. The owner manual says it should be 5 quarts and it didn't mentioned one quart more if oil filter changed. Could the length of oil dipstick is wrong? I am sure the engine is all original since my grandpa bought it as brand new. The length of oil dipstick is 23-3/4" between end of dipstick and inside of the cap. However, I drove it yesterday and it seems fine...
    Hope one of you will solve this problem. Thanks for any help in advance!

    It's possible one of the vendors has a NOS part. Click on SDC Home at the top of this page and from there go to the vendor list and start calling. I think the part number may be stamped right on the dipstick, so that may help if you find a used part.
    As Jeff said those things can get mangled if bent a little and not installed just so. Years ago I remember a guy that had that happen, so he put a regular breather cap on his pickup and kept the cap with dipstick behind the seat! Have you looked?

    It should be part of the oil filler vent cap.
    Also be aware that you need to make sure that you put the cap back into place with the flat part of the dipstick blade parallel to the crankshaft centerline. Sometimes, if put in crooked, the blade can touch part of the crank, and you'd swear you had a bad tappet.

    Dwain G.: Thanks for the info! I did look down in the tube - no broken spring steel dipstick. Do you know where I can find the parts your provided the numbers for? I have not yet been able to locate a vendor.

    It has its own hole in the block. The dipstick fits into a tube about 6 inches long
    that comes out of the blocks left. back, lower, side. The car is a 1950 Starlight. If this sounds
    like what you have, I'll take photos of the stick for you. The truck engine may be different.

    There is actually an old service bulletin that lists all those dimensions for M and R series trucks. On a 2R5 the dipstick is attached to the oil fill cap and is 17 3/4" long. To locate the full mark you must first measure the oil pan depth. If it is 7 55/64" use dipstick # 678770. The full mark will be 1 7/8" up from the bottom.
    If the pan depth is 8 15/64" use dipstick # 680204, and the full mark would be 2 3/32" up from the bottom.
    Oh yeah, look down inside the tube and see if the old piece is in there!
