  • 3 Speed w/o,d. oil fill

    When I top off my trans it also fills my OD unit. Is this normal?
    Everything appears to work just fine, it just seems strange that both units would have a fill & drain plug when it is only needed in the trans.

    Also my '50 Starlight Champion has a 4.1 rear. I thought when I got the build sheet if this was a special order it would be listed. No mention. Isn't this a little unusual? Performance at 65 M.P.H. is good with what seems to be of little effort. Pretty slow from a light though. I'm fine with it and not thinking of a change, just puzzling.

    One does flow right into the other. You may want to check the level in the OD unit just to be sure it's got enough. Are you using either 90 wt mineral oil or SAE 40 NON-detergent motor oil? There may be some synthetics that are okay to use, but I don't know which ones. But definitely be aware of the dangers of modern manual trans oil. I believe they attack the brass parts in these old transmissions. Someone knowledgeable please jump in here to advise!

          I've got 40W non-det. in there now but now that I know where to get Mineral Gear Oil, SAE 90, API GL1 (NAPA) I think that's the way I'll go.

          Regarding the oil level. When I drained the trans and OD and then preceded to refill the trans, the OD unit was to the top of its fill hole before I was finished with the trans. I put the OD plug in and finished topping off the trans. Have I now overfilled the OD? This was at least 500 miles ago and no problems.

          Also, while I'm talking about lubes, there's the rear springs. They are fully,factory, banded in what appears to be Stainless Stl. with (2) zerks on each bottom side. The shop manual recommends "Graphite Spring Lubricant." Try and find that at your local NAPA store. Anyway, I've had the car for three years and have avoided using any grease on the rear springs. Suggestions?

              Okay, to save everyone the time of downloading, here is the key section:

              Lubrication
              The transmission and overdrive unit are connected
              with oil passages so the same oil is used
              for both. However, the following precautions
              must be used in the filling, in order that the
              proper amount of oil may be carried.

              1. In making the initial filling, first fill the overdrive
              unit with the proper oil, until oil runs
              out the filling hole, then replace plug. Fill
              the transmission with the same type of oil,
              until oil runs out the filling hole, then re-
              place plug.

              2. In subsequent filling (at each chassis lubri-
              cation), inspect the transmission only, for oil
              level, and fill as necessary.

              Upon reading these instructions, I'm left with the impression that perhaps the "full" level in the transmission is higher than the "full" level in the OD section. If so, that could explain why they recommend filling the OD first. Otherwise, you may get trapped air at the top of the OD, instead of completely filled by oil. Does that sound plausible?

                Well, I'd drained Pete's tranny as completely as I could a few weeks back. I had bought some Redline lube to give it a try, but the tranny leaks as it is and I figured the Redline would be an expensive way to increase leak flow. I have TWO other trannies and I was hoping to reseal one and use it, but I was getting tired of Pete being on jackstands, so for now, he's using the veteran gearbox he's used for years.
                SO, anyway, I went with the GL-5 again. Filled both sections seperately and all seems well. Probably the fact that I USE the pancake syrup-like stuff is why I've never seen one pour out the other. A half inch hole's slow goin' at 90WT![|)]

                    You're using a T85 aren't you Bob? Does the tailshaft seal leak, and have you found a replacement seal number ?

                      This topic came at the right time. I was wondering were to find the oil that is needed to fill my tranny. Now, where do I find Mineral Gear Oil, SAE 90, API GL1 (NAPA)? I have mentioned before on my other posting that I am putting a 170 flat head 6 bolted up to a T86. Thanks again. You menitoned NAPA as a source. Is this correct?

                        Roy, the one you mentioned is from NAPA. There was another thread where the virtues of Redline lubricants were extolled - MTL and MT90 I believe. Like many things, there are a number of choices!
