  • Looking for Studebaker V8

    After much debate, I am looking for a Studebaker V8 engine and Auto Transmission to put in my project '56 Transtar... anybody know where I can find one close to NE Pennsylvania?

          Thanks, Mr. Biggs, for the offer... was looking for something a little closer (ha, ha...)
          What engine and trans should I be looking for? I was going to get a 350 but after reading how well made the Stude V8's were I have had a change of heart... also would be easier (and cheaper??) in the long run to go with the Stude. I'm new to this so any and all advice would be apperciated.

            I have a 232 from a '53 Commander. Complete engine from pan to air cleaner with auto trans. It's in the Detroit area. Was running when pulled about 4 yrs ago. Will take $300 for everything.

              Rebuilt 259 just came out of a 56 Transtar in State College, Pa. The guy's going to drop the body on a Dodge Cummins chassis and doesn't need the engine. He's already sold the 700R4 tranny.

                WOW... thanks for the replies... how reliable are the Stude automatic trans? I've read that they lave a little to be desired... will a 700r4 bolt up to a Stude V8?

                  That's what Kevin had. It requires an adapter which is available. He also has other stuff from the truck available. I think you could haul his rolling chassis home with the disc brakes and 9 inch rear and Turner dual master cylinder. The engine's still in the chassis. Kevin's just waiting for the motivation to pull the cab off.

                    There's nothing wrong with a Flightomatic from a durability standpoint, it just isn't as refined and doesn't have the gear spread of a more modern automatic transmixer. It's probably stronger than most, save for maybe a TF727 or Allison - just ask Ted Harbit!

                      That early Studebaker Automatic by Detroit Gear division of Borg-Warner was a great tranny. Got a lock-up converter in third gear! Alas, while parts aren't that hard to find, there's danged few tranny guys left that know the ins and outs of them. Most tranny shops won't even look at them. They don't wqanna be bothered with something they're not familiar with and maybe will end up with warranty woes out of the deal![V]

                        A Flight-0-Matic (PRNDL) is a fairly tough transmission. A Powershift (PRND21)(water cooled) is a better choice and can stand manual shifting all day long. The one thing it doesn't have, is overdrive. A 700 R4 can bolt up to a Stude (with issues), but will drive you nuts with the 1-2 shift and problems from hooking it up to an Edelbrock carb.
                        The Grand National version of the 200r4 is a better choice, as the bolt pattern is the same and the gear ratios are more comfortable to live with. The carb issues can be dealt with.

                          The FOM shift quadrant is PNDLR. The Heavy Duty FOM, (same quadrant) which is also water cooled, is just as durable and shiftable as the PS. That's the tranny (column shift) that the factory put in all the later 63' and up R powered Larks and Hawks that were not optioned with the PS (floor shift). Also used on all police and taxi spec. orders.
