  • flexible oil tube to gauge

    Can one just use a short length of rubber tube and two clamps rather than spend $15.00 on the reproduced factory looking flex tube..........Brad

    Just an OPINION, mind you. But...............................what's an engine worth to you? At 60-80 pounds pressure it wouldn't take too long to pump all that oil onto the ground where your pump pickup can't hardly reach it. I know, I know, my two cents ain't worth too much. And you do have more posts than I do......so forget I put in my two cents worth.

      I agree, I would say the clamps would be OK ***IF*** you use proper high pressure hose and fittings and have the right high pressure clamps, you're probably over $15 by the time you get all that stuff together, just buy it

          Brad, It's not AS BAD AS, but it's AKIN to asking if you could do the same with brake hoses![}] By the time you realized your frugality had failed to prevail, the ultimate cost would be WAY MORE than $15 bucks!
          I was test driving a GT Hawk a few years back. It had been in storage for 15 years before I got my hands on it. Humorously, amongst the MANY spares that came with it - mostly NOS at that! - was a new oil gage hose. But once I got the engine to run, I was too anxious to see how well it would go[8]. Thank goodness I had the hood off! When that hose burst under 50lbs pressure, it geysered right up in front of me![xx(] I only had to hike back a mile to get the new hose, the tools to replace it and a couple quarts of oil.[}]

              I used a line from a grease gun. They are made to hold much more pressure than the 50-80 pounds your engine puts out. It cost around 12 bucks but I didn't have to pay shipping. Just an idea.

                Brad,

                Been there, done that and almost paid a big price. Saw the smoke and shut her down. Had it towed home. Cleaned it up and bought a new hose from Stude Int'l. Lesson learned. DEFINITELY buy the correct replacement hose.

                    I should have clarified Biggs. The grease hose is 1/8" NPT on both ends. I used a a fitting to go from pipe to 1/8" copper tubing with the compression fitting. So I didn't use the factory lines, I made the whole thing myself. After it was all said and done I spent about 15 bucks and it works great.

                    I just remebered, I found the original rubber line from NAPA but it was in Ohio, so I improvised.

                        At highway speeds, a broken oil pressure gauge line will empty your oil pan in about 15 seconds. Usually not enough time to notice it and shut the engine down.

                        There are probably better places to save that $15

                        I always thought those electrically operated "idiot light" oil pressure lights on the brand x's were useless...but in retrospect, they probably weren't a bad idea.

                          Of course, some of us are neurotic gauge-watchers! I think I spend more time looking at the instrument cluster when I drive than the road!
