Where is a good place to find serial numbers for the different models produced by Studebaker? Also, are the serial numbers coded so that I could tell which factory produced the vehicle? Thanks.

The front pages of pertinent parts manuals - yes, the numbes give away what plant it was from.

You want to know about a certain number? I'll look it up for you.

My ultimate goal is to purchase a Studebaker that was made in the South Bend factories when my parents worked there.

I do not have a specific serial number. In the event I decide to go look at a car or truck that is for sale, I would like to know the general numbering system (for example, 99x123456, where "99" means abc, "x" means fgh, and "123456" means xyz), and how to identify a vehicle made in South Bend.

      Thanks.

        Mark,

This should be relatively easy as after 1956 the only plants open were in South Bend and Hamilton, Ontario. The Vernon (LA plant) opened in 1936 and closed in 1956. Depending on when they worked there you should not have a problem as the majority of the vehicles produced came from South Bend anyway.

In my limited experience with Studebaker, the only way to tell for sure is to take down the body number and engine number for the year you are interested in and then either purchase a parts book for that year (can some times be hard to find) to make the determination, or to post the info an the forum and ask for help. Prior to 56, many of the cars in your location (West), may have very well be made in LA.

My father worked on the car and truck assembly lines from 1950 to December 1963. My mother worked as a secretary in the engineering department in the early to mid 50's. She quit to take a similar job at the Bendix plant because the pay was better.

Anything built after '56 would be either from South Bend or Canada. The Canuck-built cars have tended to stay north of the border. Further, assuming it still has the engine it came with, the ENGINE serial number will have a "C" incorporated in it. South Bend built cars wouldn't have a "C" in their engine's serial number. Prior to 56, you'd have to check the serial number to discern if it might have come from Los Angeles. Those LA cars, understandably, served the western US but have migrated east over the years. As well, South Bend-built units have found their way west over time.[^]
