    Ain't they purdy?


    As I posted to the Studebaker Newsgroup some time back, the '64 Daytona convertible I bought a couple months ago wasn't quite as nice as it was described (can't complain too much- no rust EVER). It sounded like it had a weak cylinder when I was cranking it so I checked the compression. 1, 2 4, 6, 7 and 8- right on spec. 3 and 5, 40 psi on first turn, cranked up to about 90 psi. I decided it was a blown head gasket between 3 and 5 so I pulled the left head. Wrong- two bad exhaust valves. So, I decided to go ahead and have all the valves ground, Ron Butts put me on to a local craftsman. He cooked the heads, checked them for true, found one warped and shaved it true then shaved the other an equal amount to keep them the same. He ground the seats and valves and replaced the two bad valves. Total charge $222.60 (including state tax). Tomorrow I paint them and start putting iot back together for the Atlantic Zone Meet this weekend.

        Now my dilemma is gaskets and installation. I have both steel (thin) and composition. Who prefers which and why? I have always put steel on dry, but some people say you have to copper coat them. Any thoughts?

          Paul - Find out how much he took off the heads. You may want to go with the composition gaskets.

            I would go with the steel shim. The copper coat is just to keep it from leaking water and with the sandwich gaskets you have to re torque them or you will have problems. You should do the same with the shim type but if you don't it won't be as critical. Not only that but you get a little extra compression.

                I painted the heads and did some detailing today then had to run some errands. The upper 90s in the barn kind of slowed me down too. I was going to work on it again tonoight, but we had a bit of a thunderstorm come through. I had to scramble to get things put away and covered (I had the freshly painted stuff drying outside). Hopefully, tomorrow...

                  I cast my vote for the composition "sandwich" gasket in your case. This will compensate for possible imperfections on your block deck, and eliminate the need to retorque. This saves a time, an important factor because of the upcoming meet you plan to attend. Since you've had the heads resurfaced, (which removes some material), the thicker gasket will reduce any port-to- port and bolt hole misalignment you might have on the intake side. Plus, you probably don't want to increase the Compession Ratio too much(as a result of milling the heads and using thin gaskets), and have to retard the timing and (or)run higher octane gas, now.

                    Thanks for the advice and opinions on my heads. Thin gasket and composition gasket advocates make good arguments. I decided to go ahead and use the steel gaskets (I Copper Coated them good).
                    Today I did a little more detailing then started putting the Daytona back together. I worked until 6:30 this evening and was almost done, but ran out of energy (in the afternoon I was working in the full sun in 95-degree weather). The sun shines in my open barn doors in the pm and shutting them cuts out too much light (and air). All that remains to be done is install and hook up the battery and re-fill the coolant (I hope). I didn't replace the battery because I painted the inner fender where it rests. It had suffered some battery acid damage.
                    Only had a couple set backs. First, I mis-read (misunderstood) what the shop manual was saying about torquing the rocker arm support screws. So, I snapped one off, However, when I removed the rocker arm assembly I found that it broke off about 1/4 inch ABOVE the surface of the block and it came out easily. The other was when I bolted the throttle bellcrank back to the engine and torqued the headbolts, I found that the rod from the pedal to the bellcrank had pulled through the floor and was jammed against the inner fender. Rather than unbolt the bellcrank I jacked up the car (with my new Harbor Freight long frame jack) and disconnected it from below and put it where it belonged. I also ended up with an extra bolt, a small cap screw, that I can't figure out.

                      Looking good. Can't wait to see it on Saturday. By the way, Lee Harrison in the Central Virginia Chapter bought a '64 convertible about 3 months ago. That makes three in the area including Sam Miller's car that Leonard Shepherd has.

                              I guess I'll find out when I pour in the anti-freeze. Actually, that's what it looked like to me too, but they are in place- had them bolted on when I painted the heads.
