Dumb question - fuel filter '61 Lark

  • Dumb question - fuel filter '61 Lark

    Where is it? I have a hard line from the pump to the carb. Shouldn't there be a fuel filter in there somewhere?

    It was a option, some just had the small filter in the fuel pump bowl.

      Thanks. "an option" Wow! I ran out at lunch and picked up a clear-housing type filter from NAPA. Gonna hack it in so I can see what's going on.

        Just a suggestion:

        If you put the filter before the gas gets to the fuel pump, you will have filtered fuel going through the pump, protecting its internals from trash. I notice that the older style fuel pumps (with the glass bowls) had their fuel filters in the bowl, which is on the incoming side of the fuel pump.

        That's where I'm plumbing in my plastic Fram fuel filter, anyhow.

          Yup! One tiny chip of varnish from the fuel tank can cripple a fuel pump. That bit of trash gets wedged under the disc in one of the two poppet valves and no more pumpee gaselene! So sollee![V]

            If you still have the original fuel pump, it will have a filter element in the "bowl" so if you are having an actual fuel delivery problem it's worth pulling it to have a look see. I know the one on my '55 was all clogged when I got it.

              I think it's doubtful that it's the "original" fuel pump, N8, but that said, I've had some original fuel pumps (with the metal bowls) that had obviously lost their filter elements years before. Who knows why - but someone (maybe even the rebuilder) didn't bother to put the element back.[xx(]
