  • R2 Hawk Air Cleaner Decal Location

What is the correct location for the air cleaner decal on a
    1963 R2 GT Hawk?[?]
Thanks in advance for the information.

Who the hell knows, I've seen the remnants of the factory decal most everywhere but one group of judges wants it on the top center.

      John/Terry,

What does this decal look like? Does it go on the Canister?

I found and bought this hawk canister yesterday for my R2 clone project

          John,

I am assuming it is "United Dry Type"

          S-I part number 3-001?

Yes that's the one. The people I talked to said it should be on the top in the middle so it is readable from the front of the car.

I moved my air cleaner decal to what I now believe is the correct location.
For much of my engine detailing I used the photo of what appears to
be a new 1963 R2 Hawk engine bay from Ed Reynolds Studebaker Hawk
Photo Archive book on page 107. In this photo I don't see an air
cleaner decal on the top, but who knows.[?]

Yes, that is the same photo that I used when I put mine together. I asked Ed, when I saw him at a swap meet, about where the photo came from and he said he didn't know. I can't be sure but I'm guessing that it is a photo of a preproduction engine. Did you notice the routing of the heater hose from the valve to the core, how the hose has two right angle bends? They still have those at SASCO and looked to be in pretty good shape for having layed around for 40 years. The other question mark in this photo is the tube to the choke from the heat riser. I had believed that the production cars had a sleeve of asbestos material over this hose. Is that right? And, Terry, now that I look at it, where did you get the hose that goes from the air cleaner to the super, the one I got from Myer looks like old dry vent hose and yours is much nicer looking.

                  Tim,

Terry has the same hose on Ebay right now. Nimesh Solanki told me yesterday they are available through some speed shops he is looking into them for me. Nimesh tells me under boost pressure the stock hose may crush and recommends this type of hose that Terry is using. I'm watching Terry's auction. There is a lot to be said for convenience.

Your FLAPS has the correct hose with a 90 degree bend and yes there was a sleeve.
