  • Gas tank repair

    I just got my tank from chem strip, a company we use to remove rust from parts. I was told that it might leave some pin holes however it left many holes lucky for me they are all on top, no leak holes on the bottom. Anyone ever repair the top of a tank? This tank was just a rusty block. I had my sending unit in the back of my truck and it blew away while I was driving home. The only bad thing that has happened this year.

    Friend of mine had one much worse than that. It, too, was all on top. If there were a few less holes I'd opt for braizing. What my friend did was cut out the worst areas and weld in new sheet metal; hey, if you can do it to a fender and smooth it out for appearence, why not the top of a tank that will never be seen? You may even be able to increase the capacity.

    Needless to say, thoroughly seal the inside.

      That is one scary looking tank![B)] YIKES!![:0] I'd go with the cutting of the top completely. Mostly at least. Actually, a new tank may be a better way to go. But if you must, replace most, if not all, of the top. Take a really close look at the inside of the bottom as well. If the top is this bad...

            i am attaching a web site of the where i had mine fixed. i was lucky enough to olny be about about 30 miles from a place that does this so i went up and checked out there set up. wow i was impressed and shelled out the money to have mine done which looked worse than yours and i hadnt cleaned it yet. it is backed with a liftime warrenty to the tank not the car or owner. i was pleased.

              You cats are something, I have been amazed at some of the comments you all make and this time you surprized me! The first Studebaker I worked on was a pre war car there was only a gas neck and a little bit of the top. I used RE-NU-ZIT and they made the tank from what I had, this tank is soild on the bottom and has some pin holes on the top. I am going to fix it. I will post the pic's so you can see how nice it could be. The inside is like brand new.[8D]

                  I have had three tanks done and all seem well now for years. However, two notes of precaution. On the first I had done, the tank had an integral pickup tube and the place got sealer inside the tube which I had to get out before putting the tank on the car. And be aware the orange color sealer inside does have thickness to it, in which case I had to pry my pickup tube off the base of the tank to get the gas to flow into it. The third tank was done by a different place and they showed more quality in the work. One other thing, the outside is coated in black.....the first place shipped it "wet" packed in bubbly during the summer and the bubbly stuck all over the outside of the tank. At that time (7-8 years ago), the cost was right at $300+.

                    Yes, We have a RE-NUZ-IT in Gaithersburg. This company is great. I have never had a problem with a tank I had done. I have had three. This tank that I am working on now is just dmaged on the top. I like trying to reuse all original parts on a car. It makes for great stories at the car show. I need to save some money because I want those chryslar spokes. If I do this myself I could save 589.00 which is what they are charging now.[8)]

                      I believe when i had mine done in 2004 it was $325 at GasTankrenu.
