  • What size V-8

    Since the engines been pulled from my 53 Starliner its loaded on the back of my pickup. Iv'e always assumed it is the original 232 that came in the car so I thought I'd go out and look at the engine number [the engraved one next to the oil fill stack]. The number starts with the letter V. Is this a 232 or ?

        GO to the Home Page: Tec tips,specs and data, You will find the V-8 engine # there. It looks like a 259 or 232 is your engine . My 1967 Rambler had a 232 six, one great engine.

          That is most likely not the original engine. 232 serial numbers are stamped at the rear corner, on the passenger side, and are (usually) a six digit number. The "V" and "P" numbers started in 1955 as far as I know. With the "V" number, you most likely have either a 224 (1955) or a 259 (1956 on).

              1953 Commander, South Bend built. Is the number in the front corner driver's side? All of the 232's I've ever seen had the number in the rear corner, passenger side. That's where mine is.

                I first looked at the rear of the engine and could not find anything but a flat machined surface. then I looked at the front of the engine drivers side of the oil fill/fuel pump stack and thats where I found the engraved number.I'm still not clear on the size of this engine?

                      Look at the heads does the casting number say 527772? then it probably is the original. The only way you realy can tell is get the purchase order. 53 engines started from V207001 and 54's started at V282501 and almost all of them had the number on the front of the block next to the filler stack. 51 to 52's had the number in the back on the pass. side by the dist. There were 2 holes for the dist. hold down and the numbers started with V101 and went up to V206999. You can never say never with a Stude, when you do, you find one that is different and you have egg on your face.

                        My 1951 engine is stamped in the rear corner; my 1953 engine is stamped in the front corner. Both match the numbers on the build sheets.

                          '51 - '52 number's at the rear. '53-on number's at the front.

                            I would say a 1953 block if the 1954 blocks start in the 282,000 #'s and the 1953#'s start around 207,000 . I interpeted the year of 1953 from the table listed under tec tips,specs snd data.
