Hello all, just recieved a copy of Car Craft Aug 2006. On page 6 there is a blurb about Studebaker eventually becoming part of AMC. Any truth to this? I have never heard about it if so..[?]

aMC was created from Rambler, Hudson & Nash..They purchased the Willy's Jeep divison in the 70's, thats how Jeep became a part of AMC. Studebaker was looking to merge with them in the mid 50's but, that fell through hence, the Studebaker Packard merge. After that, the board of directors started buying up other companies to "diversify" Studebaker and never gave the auto division the support they needed.

Yellow journalism at it's worst!
Young punks at Car Craft never took automotive history in high school[}]
Corporations always talk about strategies and possible mergers, and Studebaker was no different.
But that one never happened..

AMC was formed from Hudson and Nash. Rambler was a model in the AMC line. Willys came into the fold in 1970 when it purchsed the Willys Jeep assets.

Oh Lord! Here we go again...[:0] I have heard this time out of hand. How many times have people asked if my car was a rambler?[)] I don't know the number.
Sigh. Some of the stupidest rumors just won't die! Sadly Studebaker did. Of course, if one looks at the subsidiaries as part of the parent (Studebaker), then the company still lives through;
STP, Worthington inc, etc..
Hey! found a couple of more studes in yet another little corner of Redding!! Two 2-door Larks (62?) and a stripped (early) Hawk.
Lotsa Larks!

"that one never happened" absolutely. I haven't read the car craft article, but if the question was "eventually", seems like it was an idea being tossed around at the time.
I've read in several sources George Mason at Nash the supporter of the idea, but several factors including his death ended it.

Actually, the Rambler name was coined by the Jeffrey company in 1902. It was Charles Nash, formerly President of Buick, who bought the Jeffrey company and from that came Nash Motors. George Mason came to Nash by way of Kelvinator, when the two companies merged. It was Mason's idea to merge Nash, Hudson, Studebaker and Packard. Unfortunately, he only half succeeded. By merging Nash and Hudson and forming American Motors, the company flourished for many more years. He died too soon to follow through. No one knows if he would have succeeded though.
