I need help to figor out why my 492r10 truck's starter will not ingage. Can anyong help me????

  • #2
What are the symptoms? Does the starter not spin at all, or does it spin and not engage the flywheel, or does it spin and engage the flywheel and then stop without turning it? Or does it spin and engage the flywheel and turn it, but not with enough speed to start the engine?

It sounds like he needs a new starter drive (Bendix) It spins the starter gear into the the flywheel to start, then is spun back by engine rotation when it's runnning.

New Bendix. That's the spring-loaded gear which engages the flywheel. The teeth wear out, the spring gets shot or busted, the cam gets worn down. Those are easy to get and install. Could just be totally crudded up and a cleaning will get it working.

Your starter SHOULD have the bendix that's WAY out there on the end of the shaft. Is that right? It (the bendix) pulls IN towards the body of the starter to engage the ring gear. Try cleaning and lubricating the cam part of the bendix with some light oil. Work it back and forth by hand a bit then try it again in the truck.

It may well come down to you needing a new one if it's rusted, rotted or just worn out.[xx(] Part number 197313

You need filament or the whole housing?

If you have the oil bath air filter, you are supposed to open it up and take the steel mesh out. Clean it with kerosene (I used diesel fuel - I'm chea AH more frugal). Put a half quart of 30 wt. oil in the bottom and reassemble.

In my 51 the mesh can't be removed from the upper half of the housing. If yours is the same, just soak the whole thing with parts cleaner or kerosene and reassemble with a new quart of oil in the bottom.

I'm also not familiar with the 3/4 ton wheel bolt pattern but if someone here is maybe they could recommend a replacement non-split rim.

MAn - an oil bath air cleaner will outlast you! Just clean it and add fresh oil. A 3rd of a quart of oil is a heck of alot cheaper than an 8 or 10 dollar disposable element. [:0]
