I have a 1960 Hawk and can't turn off the heat. Heated Seats all the time. The water valve on the firewall seems to open and close with the throw of the lever on the dash board. I think it opens and closes all the way. Do these valves go bad? Might this be my problem? There is an auxiliary heater under the drivers seat. That one does not get hot but the one under the passenger seat really hot to the touch. Any ideas?

Make sure the fresh air ducting and hose for the passenger side is not letting hot air in.

Yes, those valves can go bad. If the problem is not in the air duct, before you attempt to replace the valve, use a flat clamp or pair of straight vise grip to stop the coolant flow through the heater hose. If that solves the problem replace the valve or tell the judges the vise grip was a factory option.Brad Johnson,

If it is a water flow and not an air flow problem, take the water out of the equation if you only use the car in nice weather. I take out the nipples that the heater hoses attach to at the engine end and replace them with pipe plugs. You can reattach the hoses to the pipe plugs. This way you will have NO hot water entering the heater and eliminate the chance of a problem with a broken/leaking heater hose or heater core.

If it is the valve not shutting off and your heater cores are good just replace the valve. You can get one that will fit in the engine compartment and you will just have to open the hood and change it according to the weather. I even have used ball valves.
