  • 1953 Auto Trans

    I thought awhile back that there was a discussion on
    the type of transmission fluid to use in the DG's and
    that inorder to check the fluid level, the transmission
    had to be put in "L" while doing the check. Can't seem
    to find that discussion. I am I "Zoning" out here in the
    Northern Zone of AZ or what? I just want to make sure
    that dexronIII/mercon is ok....and the method to check
    is proper.

    Dexron and check with the transmission well warmed up and in Low (after shifting through the gears). Only add a little at a time and recheck. Do not overfill. I recommend (and do it myself) changing the fluid in the transmission and torque converter on an annual basis in those BW DG transmissions.

      At least on my '51, you are correct about putting the car in "L" in order to check and add fluid. Also, I believe DexronIII/Mercon is okay to use as well as Type F, which is what I just filled up with.

          Believe it or not, when first produced, the manual called for 10W10 engine oil in the transmission. That aside, Dexron-Mercon III is fine. My car has been driven over 15K miles, with Dexron, without a problem. If you're unsure about what's in it, it would be better to drain the entire trans, including the converter and refill with Dexron.
          You fill it by warming it up, setting the handbrake and putting the lever in "L" (Better to have a buddy stand in the brake tho) Fill to just below the top mark. Never overfill, as it could cause foaming
