Dug into the "Search" bin for this, but didn't find exactly what I was looking for, so here goes: I know where there is a rough 65 or 66 Parts car. 6 cyl Chevy, automatic. Can the flanged axles be used in a 1958 rear end? If not just the axles alone, what about if I use the ring gear carrier, too? Or, the whole assembly, housing and all? I believe this might be a worthwhile upgrade, if the price is right and the parts will fit okay. Thanks.

Most likely, that 65-66 rear end is a model 27 Dana if it's a six-banger. You'd want a model 44 for a V8 car.

You would have to use the WHOLE axle, not just the shafts, I would go
over and look for the tag, it MIGHT be a model 44 since by then Stude
was using up parts anyway. Someone also might have ordered one. My
brothers '64 Daytona had a model 27, was a 259 V8 car.

259-powered cars usually GOT a 27 rear axle. 44s were used behind 289s, R-series cars and under severe use vehicles. Taxis, station wagons, etc..

Thanks for the info. Just have to go up there and look to see for sure, but it's probably nothing special, then. I suppose I could take a 44 inspection cover or gasket along if that would be a quick way to tell the difference. I beleive my 58 has a tag on the outside telling me the ratio is a 3.31.

just take a screwdriver or gasket scraper, the model number of the axle is cast into one of the "webs" facing the rear of the car
