  • 53 crankcase ventilator

Looking at a catalog of accessories for '53 I see CRANKCASE VENTILATOR "Assures ample and clean air for crankase ventilation...use only Studebaker-Fram replacement cartridge."

Has anyone ever seen one of these? I know I haven't. Also listed is a RADIATOR AND WATER CLEANER. Never seen one of those either.

Don't remember seeing either item on a car, but the coolant filters have been standard equipment on large trucks for years. Now seeing a lot of them on medium duty trucks too. Below is a Stude V8 showing the items mounted.

The crankcase ventilator is at top, right of carburetor. See also that the oil cap/breather is replaced with a sealed unit. A small electric motor draws filtered air in and pushes it through the engine and out the stock road draft tube. The generic L-head 6 engine is in a 1950 Fram ad. In those days sludging could be a problem, and also moisture collecting inside the engine to cause corrosion which sometimes caused broken valve springs. Better spring material, better metal coatings, better oils, and better ventilation have pretty much eliminated that problem.
I also have a Fram installation booklet for these devices. They were available at least up to 1958.

I don't recall seeing the ventilator on a car, but I remember seeing a lot of the water cleaners for sale (NOS) at Standard Surplus (now SASCO) and I have seen them on cars.

I'm not even sure a C or K hood would close with the ventilator mounted as shown.

You would want to leave the hood up, so everyone could see the really neat ventilator!

Or, incorporate a hood bulge and tell everyone it has a supercharger![]
