  • Spline count on tapered axles

Hello all, I have a Dana 44 I believe from a 1956 half ton truck. Tapered axles, were all of these used in Studes 19 spline? I am eventually going to get a posi unit, but I want to make sure that 19 spline is indeed what I need...Thanks!

    Yes

    Miscreant at large.

    1957 Transtar 1/2ton
    1960 Larkvertible V8
    1958 Provincial wagon
    1953 Commander coupe
    1957 President 2-dr
    1955 President State
    1951 Champion Biz cpe
    1963 Daytona project FS
No deceptive flags to prove I'm patriotic - no biblical BS to impress - just ME and Studebakers - as it should be.

Thanks again Mr. Biggs! Is there any disadvantage, or advantage to 30 spline vs. 19 etc? I have found a 19 spline posi system with some looking, but it seems that other mfg's used the 30 pretty regular..Not that it matters to my app, but I was just wondering why the 30 seemed so popular..Thanks!!

            finer splines are stronger.

I guess what I'm asking is, within reason, you can still pour the coal to the 19 spline, and be ok??

The axle will break at the tapered end before the splines have an issue, usually...
