What and where do I hook up to put a oil filter on the 49champ?

and can I buy what I need local?

  • #2
I doubt you'll find something local unless it's at some old junkyard. You need the filter, the filter cannister, the bracket to mount it utilizing a couple of the head bolts, the input line W/fittings and the return line W/fittings. And one of the two input line fittings needs to be a restricted fitting that minimizes the volume of oil that can flow thru it. This is so you don't dump all your oil pressure thru the filter and back into the engine[xx(]

The input line taps (usually) the frontmost oil gallery outlet on the right side of the engine and routes around to the left side of the engine, where the oil filter cannister mounts. The return line goes from the cannister to a fitting at the base of the oil filler tube - the one that the dipstick sticks into on your car.

The feed and return lines are available from SI. For the filter cannister and brackets you'll probably need to find a donor, swap meets, put a want-ad in Turning wheels or hope someone here will offer you their spare.

I've been wanting to install an oil filter on my '54 Champion six. However, I don't think that this engine has ever been apart, at least not for decades, and I'm more than a little reluctant to loosen any head bolts to install the mounting bracket. Or am I worrying needlessly?

I don't think you need to worry 15G.

Dan O, I think I have a setup on a core 6 I have here. Modestly priced and I'll take pics before I remove it. E-mail me if you're interested.
